Not your average beach house! Built in 1940 this charming 900 square foot beach cottage was restored by an architect and beautifully updated by the owner who is an interior designer. (aleciastevens.com) There is not a piece of sheetrock in the home - instead, a wonderful mix of wood paneling. The freshly-painted, all white interior is the perfect backdrop for the mix of vintage rugs and furnishings with comfortable seating and great mix of lighting, textiles, original art and accessories. New European white oak floors have a natural finish. There are dining tables both inside and on a screened porch where you may want to eat. You can take morning coffee and afternoon drinks in the lounge chairs on the screened porch or enjoy the deck if you love the sun. The stars at night are magical as the island stays dark for the sea turtles. We have 2 parking spots with outdoor motion-sensor lighting for coming and going safely. The beautiful natural landscaping outside the cottage is designed by local landscape architect and just updated with irrigation in the Spring of 2020. All of our efforts have been to keep it feeling like the vintage beach property it is while adding all the modern touches to make it comfortable. Amenities include a Wolf range, a Viking refrigerator, top of the line Asko dishwasher, and Asko washer and dryer. We provide beautiful linens, cotton sheets and feather pillows. We have foam pillows on request. But cannot adequately clear the house of all down for those allergic to it.
It is perfect for couples and an ideal retreat spot for artists and writers. (George Gershwin wrote the music for Porgy and Bess on Folly Beach.) The Atlantic Ocean is just two short blocks. We have named this cottage "Otium" in honor of Cosimo di Medici's first villa in Firenze, a place we love - (and with some irony to compare the two, of course!) Otium is a Latin word meaning "leisure - with dignity." It implies time for reading, writing, art, reflection, conversation and music. Of course, we have no pretense that this is the Villa Medici, but the mood translates!
Folly is Charleston's most popular beach for surfing so it can be fun to see them make their magic while going for a walk or reading on the beach. Sea turtles, dolphins, pelicans and the great white heron were all a part of my walk this morning. It's quite magical and peaceful. To note: we are 7 long blocks from the center of town. For us, this is of great value as the beaches tend to be the most crowded near the pier at Center Street. Once past about 5th Street, we notice the beach is much less busy.
Downtown Charleston, with its' abundance of restaurants and historic treasures, is a 20-minute drive. We provide a dossier with recommendations for food, drink, natural and historic sites and shopping.
This is a non-smoking unit for adults over 30. The furnishings are of a quality level well above a standard beach cottage and we need it treated accordingly. It is our home, not just a rental unit. We aren't a home for parties, but drinks and dinners for a few friends are fine. The dining table indoors seats 4 while the porch table seats 6-8. We require a damage deposit, insurance and weekly housekeeping should you stay longer than a week to keep our amazing housekeeper gainfully employed and our home at its best. Our guests tell us how much they appreciate her.
