Welcome to Southerland Cottage! Our newly remodeled one bedroom cottage offers wooded privacy and adventure that is just steps away. Our cozy retreat is close to Headwaters State Forest, our newest state forest in the area. From the cottage you can walk to Reece Place Falls, the premier waterfall in Headwaters. It is an approximate 2 mile hike from the cottage. Please note that Headwaters is rugged and hiking is at your own risk. As with any hiking expeditions in our area, have a plan and let someone know where you will be and when you expect to return. If you would like to go for a swim, jump in the car and head toward East Fork Falls. It is a 1 1/2 mile drive from the cottage and a short hike off the road. While you are here, you must travel to Sassafras Mountain Overlook. It is about a 15 minute drive from the cottage and on a good day, you can see 4 states from the Observation Tower. Fishing is also a close 5 minute drive from the cottage on the East Fork River.
Although there is plenty to do close by, you can also just kick back and relax at the cottage. Our cottage offers a special retreat to rejuvenate and relax after a day of exploring. The covered porch is a great hangout to start that new book and enjoy the sights and sounds of Appalachian nature. It is also the perfect place to "put your feet up" after a day of outdoor activities exploring the 'Land of the Waterfalls.' Inside the cottage, we have added many personal touches to make it a vacation to remember. There is a comfy bedroom, private bathroom and mudroom with washer and dryer all of which accommodates 2 people comfortably. We have decorated our cottage with unique antiques and comfortable furniture. The cottage also boasts beautiful pine walls and wonderful hardwood floors throughout. The kitchen is fully equipped to meet all of your cooking needs and a charcoal grill is available to grill your favorite dishes. The queen size bed offers a comfortable night's sleep and is adorned with a beautiful hand picked quilt.
If you want to venture out, there is plenty to do in the area. Our cottage is within walking distance to the new Headwaters State Forest and we are fortunate to be in close proximity to Dupont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park, Nantahala National Forest, and Caesars Head State Park. You will enjoy many hiking trails, biking paths, horseback riding areas, fishing streams, and beautiful waterfalls.
We recommend a visit to Looking Glass Falls in the Pisgah National Forest or a refreshing swim at Hooker Falls in the Dupont State Forest. We also suggest a hike to the Raven Cliff Falls in Caesars Head State Park (our favorite).
The quaint town of Brevard, home of the legendary Brevard Music Center, is another 'must see' and hosts numerous antique stores, novelty shops, and excellent restaurants.
